French Onion Search: Felix, New York City

June 3rd, 2008 § 0

There’s just something about a bowl of French onion soup – the top of the crock spewing with Gruyère lava, and the bread – crunchy crusted or soggy submerged – between the sweet tangy spoonfuls of caramelized onion and broth. It’s a relatively quick bite, but there’s no room for haste and definitely no delivery or pick-up option (trust me, I’ve tried). After realizing my own penchant for the unpretentious and tasty FOS, I decided to chronicle my quest for the perfect bowl of French Onion in New York City and beyond. Here’s my first one of the season:

Price: $10.50 (Amex or cash only!)
Wait Time: 18 minutes
Rating: 3/5

Last week, I took a leisurely lunch at Felix (on a weekday!) with a friend who also works in Soho. Seated at a street-side table, we each had a bowl of FOS, paired with a refreshingly crisp beet and endive salad with rocquefort and walnuts. La soupe à l’oignon gratinée was pretty good, but I’ve had better for cheaper. The only thing unquinessential about it was that the cheese was surprisingly stringy and hard to eat once you broke through the molton crust. I would go back, but only because it’s so close to work and the staff is pretty friendly.
